Your child’s lunchbox should not only be appealing but also meet their growing nutritional needs during this vital stage of development. Children require adequate fuel to learn, play and build a strong immunity. It’s a time when habits are formed and nutrient intake can strongly influence physical and mental development.

To support their health, focus on offering a variety of foods. Ideally something from each major food group, such as starches; healthy fats; vegetables; fruit; protein and dairy. Not only will this keep things exciting but will also boost the nutrient profile of their meals.

Don't forget about dairy - this food group is crucial during childhood and adolescence. Majority of an adult’s maximum bone strength has accumulated by the end of teenage years, therefore it should feature regularly in your child’s lunchbox.

We have compiled some mix-and-match lunchbox suggestions - perfect for keeping children energised during the school day and throughout after-school activities:

Classic Sandwiches

  • Egg and mayonnaise

  • Chicken / tuna mayonnaise with lettuce

  • Salad sandwich and mayonnaise

  • Peanut butter and syrup / jam

OR

Rice Cakes / Crackers

  • Peanut butter and banana slices

  • Cream cheese and cucumber

  • Hummus / guacamole

Dairy Delights

  • Cheese cubes or wedges

  • Small yoghurt cups or drinking yoghurt (watch the sugar content)

  • Flavoured milk (watch the sugar content)

Snacks

  • Air-popped Popcorn / 28g Trigz chips / 24g Flings

  • 2 Weetbix Breakfast Biscuits

  • Mixed nuts

  • Biltong

  • Fresh fruit

  • Vegetable sticks (e.g. carrot; cucumber or cherry tomatoes)

Caution: certain foods such as nuts, popcorn and hard veggie sticks can be a choking hazard for younger children. Always tailor lunchboxes to your child’s age and chewing ability.

When You’re Short on Time

Woolworths, Pick 'n Pay and Checkers offer a range of convenient 200g kids’ meal options that are balanced and microwave-friendly. These are great for lunchboxes that can be reheated or even kept as a backup for dinner.

Pro tip: don’t forget to pack enough water to support a healthy lifestyle. Consider freezing it the night before so it stays cool during the day.
