There’s something about the first signs of spring that makes everything feel lighter, fresher and full of possibility. Just as we open windows, declutter closets and sweep out the cobwebs at home, spring is also the perfect time to give your eating habits a gentle refresh.

This season isn’t about restriction or extreme diets but rather re-energising your body, boosting your mood and laying the foundation for healthy habits that will last well beyond the warmer months.

Tiny tweaks to your everyday habits can add up to big, sustainable results. Let’s take a look at some ways to "spring clean" your diet.

1. Rethink your Snacks

Snacking gets a bad rap but when done right it can help stabilise your blood sugar; keep cravings in check and fuel your energy throughout the day.

Instead of reaching for chips or sugary treats, spring is the perfect time to take advantage of fresh, seasonal produce and get creative.

Try:

  • Sliced apples or pears with peanut butter

  • Carrot sticks, cucumber or baby tomatoes with hummus

  • Greek yoghurt with fresh berries and a sprinkle of sunflower seeds

  • Boiled eggs with a pinch of salt and pepper

  • Wholegrain crackers with avocado and lemon juice

September's seasonal stars include strawberries, asparagus, avocados, spinach and fresh herbs - all great snack or meal additions that can brighten your plate.

2. Hydration

Did you know even mild dehydration can affect your energy, concentration and appetite? As temperatures start to rise, it’s crucial to keep those hydration habits in check.

Try:

  • Starting your morning with a glass of water before your coffee.

  • Adding slices of lemon, cucumber and or mint to your water for a refreshing twist.

  • Keeping a reusable water bottle with you to make sipping effortless.

Pro tip: Don’t rely only on thirst, by the time you feel it, you may already be slightly dehydrated.

3. Add More Plants

Instead of thinking about what to cut out, think about what you can add in, especially when it comes to plant-based foods. Increasing your intake of vegetables, legumes, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds can benefit long-term health.

Some easy spring swaps:

  • Add spinach or rocket to your morning omelette or smoothie.

  • Try a Meat-Free Monday with chickpea curry, lentil bolognese or a veggie and tofu stir-fry.

  • Snack on roasted chickpeas or a trail mix with nuts and seeds.

4. Refresh your Mealtime Routine

Spring is a great time to become more mindful about how (and when) you eat. Rushing meals, skipping breakfast or late-night snacking can all disrupt hunger cues and energy levels.

  • Take time to sit and eat without screens.

  • Listen to your hunger and fullness signals.

  • Create simple meal routines that suit your lifestyle.

Even preparing your lunch the night before or batch cooking on a Sunday can reduce weekday stress and keep you fueled with nourishing options.

5. Move with the Season

As the days get longer and warmer, consider:

  • Morning walks or lunchtime stretches

  • Outdoor yoga or a quick home workout

  • Gardening, hiking or dancing in the living room - whatever gets you moving!

More movement can also lead to more mindful food choices. It's a positive cycle.
